KONA Hawaii

Ah, Kona Hawaii. What a strange, strange name for this particular restaurant. Really, I would think that with the variety of Japanese food they sell, it would be named something Japanese.

But then further research proved me wrong. Apparently Hawaiian food does have quite a bit of Asian influence to it. Huh. I never knew. Watching that one food network challenge episode with the Hawaiian themed stuff made me think all their usual food as similar to ones they usually have for traditional celebrations, I think. You know, with lots of tropical fruits and fish. Giant fish. Okay, maybe not really the giant fish.

Lilo and Stitch made me think Americanized food too.

But I digress. Therefore without further ado, here’s my two cents about this place.

I first came here with my lovely seniors, as this seems to be one of their favourite spots to eat. It’s inexpensive, in a mall (Galleria Mall), with air-conditioning and not that far from the BSR residence.

What more could you ask for?
Oh right, a delivery service! Yeah they have that too.

Food wise, I love it! I mean, don’t expect 5 star quality ‘cause that’s just absurd.

I had the Loco Moco at one time, and the Loco Burger the other. The Loco Moco seems to be like that Japanese-style burger patty with an egg and gravy served on top of rice. The gravy tastes pretty awesome, for me. Kind of like that Ikea Meatballs gravy we all know and love ( god knows I haven’t eaten those in more than a year).

Loco Burger is the patty,egg and gravy, in a bun! YAY! Even better. The only problem I have with the food here is the serving size. Don’t expect to be full if you’re a big eater. Otherwise, it’s…Okay. Makes one content enough. For a while.

Don’t really know about the serving size for other food though. Seems ok enough. I let you be the judge of that, since, to each their own.

For this place, there is a minimum order of IDR50k before they deliver anything to you. Therefore, I suggest ordering in a group, together with you friends. On the plus side, there are no delivery charges.

Mister Burger

One of the most well-known stalls in Jogja would probably be the Mister Burger stalls. Mister Burger is a franchise that is in a way similar to our beloved Ramlee and Otai burgers in Malaysia. What differs from Ramlee is that Mister Burger also has branches that specialize in fried chicken and hotdogs. They are all separate stalls, but most can be found in the vicinity of another.

These are the first delivery food we had upon coming here, if I’m not mistaken.

Aesthetically, it is very appealing, no?

Unfortunately, my taste buds beg to differ. I found the patty to be a bit too dry and a tad bit salty. Indeed, my roommate agrees with the salty part, so it’s not just me.

There are friends who enjoyed it of course, so I say give it a try if you feel like eating a cheap burger. Just don’t expect the familiar taste of Ramlee burger or the always yummy Otai burger. (oh how I miss that right now. I shall have one as soon as I get back to Malaysia!)

Anywhoo, managed to find a proper menu this time. No promises that all the burgers here are actually available, as I have never gone to the actual stall myself. My first impression of the burger wasn’t so good, but looking back at the actual available choices, it doesn’t look half bad. But as they say, pictures can be deceiving.

Yeah, maybe I will try it again at least once more.

Of New Ventures and Beginnings

Greetings, everyone! I am a fellow Malaysian student (albeit merely a freshman) of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

As I write this post, I have been in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for approximately 2 and half months, give or take. Why did I decide to write this blog? While we’re at that, what IS this blog going to be about anyway?

For starters, let’s just say early on, it hasn’t been that great of a time locating food. I’ve been scouring the sites, hoping and hoping to find a decent website or blog that would help find the best eateries that would suit mine own taste buds.

Local food tend to be dry. When I say dry, I don't mean that they lack moisture, no. I meant that the foods are without all the sauces and gravies that Malaysian foods tend to have. Oh, I meant local rice accompaniments, that is. You know, like we have curry, masak kicap, masak lemak and all that goodness that we all know and love.

Whereas, here, especially in the first few weeks, we had rice, chicken (fried or roasted), with a side of sambal, some herbs and cucumbers maybe, or veggies that are very simply cooked (which I don’t really mind, mind you) and keropok. And oh look! FRUIT!

It was pretty good at first, until we had it the next day as well. And the next. And the day after that too.
It was the only thing we knew to get. Oh woe be to the ones who do not know.

Suffice to say it gets BORING. Maybe it’s just me? I don’t know. I couldn’t survive on that alone, and I wasn’t very eager to go out much that time around, especially past 6. It gets dark here extremely quick. Sun rises pretty early too.

Please, do not misunderstand. It doesn't mean that there's nothing nice to eat AT ALL here. It's just that, we didn't know where to find anything.

So I searched, and searched, and searched. And came up with not much. That doesn’t mean there’s none though. No! It’s just quite hard to find. THAT, my friends, is why I decided to make this blog. To help catalogue all the places that deliver food to the residence.

The process will be slow in the going, because, as per the blog’s domain name, I am a hermit crab, and I prefer staying in my room than anything.
